1921 (Taisho 10) On Tuesday, June 14, Wang Caiyu, Chiang Kai-shek’s mother, passed away. He was 59 years old. Wang Caiyu was born in 1864 as the oldest daughter of businessman and landowner Wang Youze. I am currently from Shengzhou, Zhejiang Province. At the age of 20, she married Chiang Chao-tsung, a salt manufacturer who was 44 years old at the time, and Chiang Kai-shek, her eldest son, was born.
After her husband Chiang Chao-tsung died in 1895, she brought up her children while running the family salt industry. 100 years ago at that time, Chiang Kai-shek, a 33 year-old leader of the Guangdong government, held a big funeral for his mother in Lukou Town and built Wuling Elementary School in his birthplace to commemorate her mother. The epitaph was written by Sun Yat-sen, and Hu Hanmin and Wang Chao-ming of the Guangdong government also inscribed the epitaph.
The other day, five days ago, on the air on June 9, Lady Randolph Churchill, the mother of Winston Churchill, had passed away. It is a strange coincidence that the mothers of Chiang Kai-shek and Winston Churchill, the Allied leaders of World War II, died just five days apart in June of the same year.
Franklin Roosevelt, 39, was the 44th governor of New York at the time, one of the three delegates at the November 1943 Cairo Conference, where the Allies defined post-war Japan policy. Franklin’s mother, Sarah Roosevelt, was alive and well in New York. Sarah died on September 7, 1941, exactly three months before Pacific Sensei was launched by Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor.
To confirm the ages of the three men at the Cairo Conference, Winston Churchill was born in 1874, Franklin Roosevelt was born in 1882, and Chiang Kai-shek was born in 1887 and was the youngest leader.
